Vietnam's becoming the 150th WTO member is an important event for in general and small business in particular. I think of challenges and opportunities in exactly the same way. Hence, if the WTO creates more challenges, and it will, great opportunities will also present themselves.

, Vietnam, with 85.5mil people, is a huge potential market and there are many businesses from many different countries waiting for the opportunity to pursue trade inside . This will be to the benefit of the country as it exposes consumers and businesses to outside practices and standards, introduces new ideas and allows the country to grow.

Seconds, will be able to take advantage of the WTO dispute-settlement mechanism and will benefit from equal trade treatment like other WTO members.

Finally, has many strengths that will allow it to handle the future with confidence - the workforce is strong, well educated, and provides a large pool for employers to draw from; the Government is supportive, the infrastructure is growing, and expertise is developing quickly.

Apart from its opportunities, however, member of WTO has a lot challenges.

Fist, this will mean change, particularly over the next few years as adapts to the new environment. But much work has already been done on the political and legislative sides and commerce has started to adapt.

Seconds, Certainly the reduction of barriers and opening up of trade brings both risks and rewards. It is for Vietnamese entrepreneurs to take up the challenges and strengthen their businesses so that they are better able to compete.

Exposure to new entrants in their home market will require Vietnamese businesses to drive harder for better product offerings, more efficient operations and greater consistency and reliability in their dealings with customers.

And for exports and establishing overseas operations, these businesses will need to produce the highest quality products and services, delivered to agreed schedules.Perhaps the greatest challenge facing is the need to develop management capability.



Challenges and opportunities go hand in hand and we cannot have one without the other. Every country faces adaptation and adjustment when joining WTO, will be no different. I am confident in 's proven ability to meet the future of a market economy as it has over the last five years since the ratification of the US-Vietnam bilateral trade agreement. Over the past years the Government has provided very successful management in the development and opening of the country, with this experience and good management l am confident WTO membership will be a positive step for the people of .
