urgent answer needed - question on possessive noun

I have a sentence that reads "This year's growth is expected to exceed last year."  I think this should be This year's growth is expected to exceed last year'S." Am I correct? And can someone tell me why? I need to explain why to someone else (another non-native English speaker).

Thanks!

Although you will find it without the -s , the -s is really needed, logically: the growth does not exceed the year itself; it exceeds the year's growth .
