hi I've got a big problem.Im not be able to understand the differences between adverbials......

For example in these two sentences,why we cant useHOWEVER in first sentence and why we cant use BUT in second sentence???

1-I usually have a certain amount of trouble finding a parking places,BUT this time really took the cake.

2-A year ago I was in a carpool with four other people,HOWEVER I hated having to wait around on because of my carpool members werent ready.

Another question;in this sentence why we use SO instead of THEREFORE???

There were no parking places in campus,SO I had to park in the downtown mall.

I believe the answer simply lies in punctuation. 'but' and 'so' can be used between phrases separated by a comma; 'however' and 'therefore' need a semi-colon, or sometimes even a period before them.

Sorry, but who told you that you can or cannot use or that you must or must not use any of these words. If it looks to you that other words could be used instead of those you see, that is fine, in many cases other words could be used instead of those you see.

And the second, are you sure you understand when a word is used as an adverb and when as a conjunction?

You make a contrast of the same type of events

You use this time

You try to show the maximum case

The best choice is but: short, killing, shocking separator

This is not very nice. However cannot be used this way, but if it is it means

If this is not what you wanted then this is better

so has the meaning of therefore here it is only the matter of style so it is slightly more colloquial - for example.

3-There were no parking places in campus, therefore I parked in the downtown mall.

because therefore has that forcing idea from have to already.

So not a strong headache here for you.

However must be at the begging of the sentence only and with one comma after it. So remember However is However large H and one comma. If it is not it must be separated by two commas: one in front and one behind like this: ..., however,...

I like him. However, she does not.

I like him. She, however, does not.

So if you want however to be like but you have to use [large H + one comma] or [two commas].

If you do not do that then however means using whatever means, to whatever degree, in whatever way.

Make the cake however you like = Make the cake any way you like it.

However strong he was, I beat him. = In spite of the fact that he was probably very strong, I beat him.

I would like him, however stupid he might be. = I would like him even in case he might be very stupid.

Sorry, there is nothing to explain. It is just as noted here.
