Urbanization

Since the 19th century, urbanization has been a dominant trajectory of a multitude of countries with the rise of hundreds of new cities and metropolises. Regarding its ultimate target, there goes a statement that " Urbanization is not simply about the increasing number of urban residents, expanding the area of cities. More importantly, it is about a complete change from rural to urban lifestyle in terms of industry structures, employment, living environment and social security.". From my personal perspective, rather than population growth and area expansion, urbanization should place more emphasis on improving living standards.

In the first place, urbanization begins with the aim of bettering the image and life quality of a region. Although a massive population and a vast expanse of land are two important criteria that determine a prosperous metropolis, they can not totally guarantee its stability and further development. In fact, if a place fails to provide its residents with proper sanitation, accommodation or employment prospects, it is unlikely to retain its manpower and develop economically. Luanda, the capital of Angola, is a perfect of illustration of this point. Despite undergoing an extensive urbanization since the 2000s, over sixty percent of its 8- million population are now living in substandard squalors with a serious shortage of water and electricity, not to mention a significant portion being unemployed. In other words, this process should not be confined within population boost and land extension but rather encompass a range of social issues.

Indeed, the problems that urbanization is supposed to resolve are deeply associated with the welfare of a society. These often include the diversity of working sectors, career potentials, living conditions and public security. For example, when a city manages to magnetize an influx of local and foreign investments, it will promote a more dynamic labour market with diverse demographics of workers. Besides, improving transportation, education infrastructure and recreational facilities enhance the satisfaction of the inhabitants. Meanwhile, a secure place with low crime rate solidifies people's loyalty to their residence. When these standards are met, a growing number of dwellers, an increase in land areas and a more civilized lifestyle will definitely ensue.

In conclusion, in every urbanization scheme, administrators should always put the improvement in the general living conditions in the front seat. In this way, newly-urbanized zones can ensure its long-term economic stability, social well-being and thrive in the future.
