upwind and downwind

How would the following have to be written for them to be correct?

He was standing upwind of me and the smoke from his cigarette was blowing downwind and into my face.
I am walking upwind and although I have an umbrella, I am getting wet because of the wind.

I don't know what is meant by 'upwind' in the second. We are normally upwind of something.

I took it as meaning 'walking into the wind'. I think I've heard it used that way.
