upstate New York//northern New York

A restaurant in upstate New York was serving French fries on its menu.

Hi,
I wonder if upstate in the above is interchangeable with "northern." Thanks for your enlightenment.

People from New York City not only assume they are the capital of the world, they also believe they are the center of the state, despite being jammed in the southeast corner. As a result, anything north of Yonkers is "upstate New York." I lived on the New Jersey border - you could NOT go any further south, but because I was not in NYC, I was "upstate."

So no, you cannot subsitute this. "N
