Upstart vs parvenu

Hi.
Thefreedictionary.com introduces upstart and parvenu synonymous,
Would you tell me which one is more common in American or British English?
I personally haven't heard anyone use either of them.
Thank you for your time

Hi,I have also come across the term "codfish aristocracy" meaning parvenu aristocracy based on commercial success.I suppose it has an implication of being of lower or middle class origin (say , a bourgeois) and lacking the taste to use the wealth properly hence spending it conspicuously. please correct me if I am wrong.
