Upstart is informal/standard and more general in meaning. Parvenu is formal/literary. N ouveau riche is more common than parvenu .

Hi,I have also come across the term "codfish aristocracy" meaning parvenu aristocracy based on commercial success.I suppose it has an implication of being of lower or middle class origin (say , a bourgeois) and lacking the taste to use the wealth properly hence spending it conspicuously. please correct me if I am wrong.
