"Upper marker" in ice-sailing yachting?

Anybody knows what it means?

In the vicinity of the UPPER MARKER, the counterparty drove head first into the insured party.

It's a description of an insured accident during an ice-sailing yachting competition.

Presumably the circular course is marked with poles or something, and one of them is 'upper': it is either higher than the other(s) or perhaps farther away, or at the far end of the course.
