Upper classes

Novorossiisk (New Russia) University started life as the Richelieu Lycee in 1805. In 1835 its upper classes were given university status, and in 1865 it became Novorossiisk University, with a student body of some four hundred.

What does upper-classes of university mean here? Obvioulsy it is not upper crust society that is meant? Does some used to stress the high number?

I took it to mean the advanced classes being taken by the students who had been there the longest.
