What does "upon" mean? Can I delete it in the below?

"Upon hearing the news of the defeat, the football coach promptly resigned."

What does "upon" mean? Can I delete it in the below?

"Upon hearing the news of the defeat, the football coach promptly resigned."

You can't say "the below". You could delete "upon", but it loses something. Also, there are those, me included, who think you need a subject in a prepositional clause like the resultant one: "He hearing the news

upon stresses that he resigned immediately.

So does promptly, so I would say one or the other, but not both.
