How can I get understand about "upon"?

I know "the consequences" is about "the conversion process",but what is the relationship about "conversion process" and "inhibition"?

GUGGI "First,the two models predict distinctive consequences on the conversion process upon inhibition of GTP hydrolysis by Rab5. " To me, it appears to mean that the consequences are triggered, or initiated, by the inhibition. However, this is not a terribly well written sentence (in my opinion), and I'm not sure it's possible to be certain of the meaning without further background knowledge of the process being described.
