Uplift

Hi~ What is the best meaning of the word "uplift" here? And what does the sentence try to say?

Is it alright to understand the word "uplift" as "hope or happiness"?

Or is it closer to the meaning of "making someone's feeling or spirit better"?

What do you think about the word and the sentence?

Develop uplifting leadership.: The drive for equity needs disciplined
and dedicated leadership. Martin Luther King said “all labor that
uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken
with painstaking excellence.” Equity is about uplift as an end; it is about
the struggle for justice and opportunity that has, for example, defined
African American history for 150 years (Gaines, 1996). Equity also
requires uplifting leadership as a process—to inspire multitudes, not just
a few individuals, to have the courage, commitment, and tenacity to lift
up those around them (Hargreaves, Boyle, & Harris, 2014). In Finland,
