Uphill and downhill

Hi!

If I want to make a gentle reminder to the elderly that they will go uphill and downhill before reaching the lake, is the following sentence correct?

- There is a trail going uphill and downhill before you reach the lake.

I want to emphasize the trail is a bit difficult, is there any phrase describing a trail going ‘up’ and ‘down’?

Many thanks,

K

The trail is rather steep in spots. This walk involves moderately large changes in elevation. The terrain around the lake is somewhat hilly.
