Up'em

"Barcelona 0-0 Juventus (agg 0-3)

Posted at 21:19

We are getting a lot of tweets giving Barcelona stick for diving, moaning and generally being bad losers. They do not like it up 'em." (BBC Sport website.)

What does "up'em" mean in the above?

It's a reference to "Dad's Army", an old British comedy show. One of the characters, L/Cpl Jones, often recommended using bayonets on the enemy because "they don't like it up 'em". Here I would take it to mean that Barcelona don't like it when things don't go their way, or are faced by a team that plays hard.

"up 'em" means "up them". "They don't like it up 'em" is a catch phrase from the British sitcom Dad's Army. It was the catch phrase of Lance Corporal Jones, and referred to the "fuzzy-wuzzies'" (politically incorrect term for African tribesmen) dislike of having a bayonet stuck up them. Hence it refers to someone's discomfort when they are getting a hard time.
