  • When talking about computers, I don't think there's a real difference, save that 'update' is more common.

Vince has just explained about update and upgrade. I'll give some examples to make the meaning clearly. Ex:: Good news: They'll come back home early{ tomorrow }for Tet holidays It's update news. She learns obstetrics in an upgrade class in the famous hospital in the city.

As far as I know, when dealing with computers, you use "update" when talking about the software and "upgrade" when talking about the hardware.

Hope this helps.

I think my software boxes are all marked "upgrade", actually...

Thank you all! I think I got it,

"upgrade" means "improve to a particular level of rank of somthing"

"update" implies "upgrade to the most current version"

For example:

an upgraded software implies "major functions have been added"

while "update" implies "some patches against the virus found lately"

Just my 2 cents.

That sounds good, Hly.

Every year, I buy my anti-virus "upgrade"; but during the year, I download "updates" from the website.
