Up to snuff

up to snuff
As good as what was expected, required, or demanded; satisfactory or adequate.

Hello,

Is it possible to explain or give me an idea what "snuff" refers to in the idiom above?

N-UNCOUNT Snuff is powdered tobacco which people take by breathing it in quickly through their nose.

So up to snuff = breath the powder to refresh themselves = make them feel good = satisfactory? Is this logic correct?

Thanks!
