up-front sales

Hello,
What exactly does "up-front mean" in "The company expects another $2 billion from upfront sales of future flows from gas fields"? As far as I know up-front means "paid in advance". I have not come across "up-front sales" before. Hmm... Emotion: smile

This apparently means the company today sells the future production of its natural gas fields. Buyers apparently get a much better deal this way than if they were to wait until the wells are actually in production. And the company gets money today that they can use for future production costs.
