Up front

To build trust, you need to be the first to lay some of yourself on the line and

share something about you. Remember you should share parts of yourself at a time;

don't feel like you have to be a complete open book up front.

In this sentence what does 'up front' mean? does it mean in advance?

Thanks in advance!

In this context, "up front" means that you needn't expose everything about yourself all at once. Building trust is a slow process. To do it correctly, you should share information about yourself in increments.
