Up ahead

Hi teachers. What is the difference between 'ahead' and 'up ahead'? And which of the two sentences is the better one?

1) The driver fumbles with his GPS and doesn't see the deer (up) ahead.

2) The driver doesn't see the deer (up) ahead as he is fumbling with his GPS.
