Unto

What you do not want to be done unto yourself, do not do unto others.

What does the sentence mean? What is unto?

Hi Volcano I might reword it this way: Don't do anthing to other people that you don't want other people to do to you. The word "unto" is an archaic way of saying "to".

This is an older form of English, from the Bible. It describes a moral principle on how we should behave towards other people. For example, if we don't want to be cheated, then we should not cheat others.

It's simply a negative version of Christ's "golden rule." English speaking Christians are used to hearing bible verses rendered in Elizabethan, or King James English, and "unto" is from that period.
Don't do things to other people which you wouldn't want them to do to you.

Hi Avangi

I don't think the system was going bananas -- at least not in this case.

Thanks, Amy. I finally realized the posts came in a minute apart! I found myself drowning in yellow and started swimming to the top, but I never made it. I forgot about the rule not to panic.
