until we had finished

I have to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence using the word given.

We had to finish all the work before we could leave. (UNTIL)

We had to stay ...................................... all the work.

My doubt here is, should it be 'until we had finished' or 'until we finished'?

Thanks for your answers.

Hi, Either is fine. The Past Perfect makes the sequence of events clear, but so does the 'until'. Best wishes, Clive

Hello Coach

1. We had to stay until we had finished.

2. We had to stay until we finished.

You hear both forms. But if this were an exam, and you had to choose between #1 and #2, it would probably be safer to choose #1.
