Could anyone help me in explaining the difference between until and up to.

There can be some overlap, but they're mostly different in usage and meaning:

e.g.
It's up to her to call me.

They can stay here until the evening.

Usually "until" is used for time and "up to" is used for space. "until" can be followed by a clause; "up to" cannot.

Tom worked until he was tired.
