Until recently

"The Putinversteher, who until recently had dominated the German media and are still heavily present in the German-language book market, have contributed to this development. " dear native speakers , explain please what would be the nuance if we changed to " until recently has dominated " , what's the difference ? Because I know that present perfect can denote an action which happened not necessarily until now. That it is , present perfect can be similar to past perfect, like in the following joke " the man and woman leave the restaurant on their first date. The woman says " I have had a great date ", man thinking that she is taking about current date , and then she adds , " it was two years ago". Sorry for rambling thoughts, but is is very intricate. http://hir.harvard.edu/article/?a=12634

Vladv explain please what would be the nuance if we changed to " until recently has dominated " , what's the difference ? No difference in meaning and little in intent. Using present perfect there would be its use as a 'life experience'.
