until or when?

Hello,

Which is correct? Or is there any difference between the following sentences?

1) His family had been in London for two years until they came home this July.

2) His family had been in London for two years when they came home this July.

If "they" is not refered to "his family", just somebody else, both are fine I think. The context does not rule out this possibility~
