I'd never heard of it until I met her.

I never heard of it until I met her.

Does the version without past perfect sound awkward to all native speakers? I'm asking because past perfect isn't necessary here.

The first version is grammatically correct "I had never heard of it until..." The second version is grammatically incorrect.
