Until he had reached

Hello...

The animal kept coming. He kept stepping back until he had reached a ditch.

I guess the underlined part can also be "reached", using past tense.

Do the native speakers sense the difference between "A: had reached" and "B: reached"?

Does A imply that he reached a ditch without his noticing?
