until... had

I was once told that the perfect tense should not be used together with 'until'.

For example,

I had not received the parcel until today. (incorrect)

I didn't receive the parcel until today. (correct)

But today, on CNN, I saw the following:

Until 1995, Internet entrepreneur Jack Ma had never touched a computer.

Is the rule I was taught correct?

Thanks in advance!

I had not visited England until the trip I made last week.

Present perfect doesn't seem to work with "until."

I see it the same way....

Growing up in rural China, Lee Ming told me that he had never tasted a hamburger until he came to the U.S.
