Hello, could you please tell me which of the following sentences is correct?

I put on an extra pair of socks. Until then my feet were freezing cold.

I put on an extra pair of socks. Until then my feet froze cold.

Hi,

Use the continuous to emphasize that it was a state that lasted for a period of time.

eg At 6am yesterday, my feet froze.

Until 12 hours later, they were freezing cold.

Thank you, I understand but I found many similar sentences where the past simple was used, e.g. We froze until the heating came on. Why is the simple past used in this sentence and cannot be used in the sentence I have given?

Really, I should have said the Continuous was often better, rather than saying that it was the correct one of the two tenses.
