Could you please tell me which of the following sentences is correct?

Everything went wrong until he came.
Everything was going wrong until he came.

The second one is fine.
I have a problem with the first one, but it may well be correct.

"Everything went wrong before he came" seems less offensive.

But then again, "Everything was going wrong before he came" seems better.
