Until

Hello, I found this sentence: We lived in Scotland until I was 18.
Could also the past progressive be used instead of the simple past? I mean We were living in Scotland until I was 18.

Top answer

Anonymous We lived in Scotland until I was 18. We were living in Scotland until I was 18. Both fine.

  • Anonymous We lived in Scotland until I was 18.
  • We were living in Scotland until I was 18.
  • Both fine.
  • I prefer the first.
  • "live" is already 'continuous' in meaning, so the continuous (also called 'progressive') form doesn't really add anything.
