until

If everything has gone according to plan, the chamber will have been pressurized until it reached a simulated underwater depth of 2,132 feet early last Thursday evening.

Anything wrong with the use of "until" with Simple Past and Future Perfect? Thanks.

I would turn it into a Type 3 conditional (to express regret): "If everything had gone according to plan, the chamber would have been pressurized to reach a simulated underwater depth of 2,132 feet early last Thursday evening."

This of course is only my view. Others might have a better take of it.

Buddhaheart, I agree with you on Type 3 conditional. However, I would keep "until it reached" in the sentence since it doesn't violate any rules or logic. I could be wrong. Please advise.

Thanks!

will have been pressurized until it reached

do you see what I mean now? the tense sequence? isn't it weird?

Buddaheart's version means that things didn't go according to plan, and the chamber wasn't pressurised.

The use of 'will' until it 'reached' is fine. It shows that we don't know for sure whether everything went according to plan, but this is what would have happened assuming that it did.

I agree with Nona.

Part of the plan before everything began was this:
The chamber will be pressurized until it reaches ... early on Thursday evening.

Now that part of the plan has been put into action and the rest of the plan is presumably still ongoing. When we look at the above mentioned part of the plan (which is now "a future plan in t

Thank you Amy and Anon. I think I have a better understanding now. But the original sentence is still a bit awkward to me. It makes sense if the sentence is used after an experiment is over and the speaker does not know how the experiment went. Do you say that in the middle of an experiment? or would you say :

If everything goes according to plan, the chamber
