unsustainable nature ?

Sir Alex Ferguson’s desire to land Robin van Persie “at all costs” ahead of Manchester City is set to come home to roost; the unsustainable nature of that layout for a club laden with an incredible level of debt will be underlined.
I can't understand "unsustainable nature",please. ?

That explanation was really helpful

I wonder also, if,there's a problem with "layout". My understanding, in the context of football, is that layout is how you deploy the players on the field. What the writer seems to mean is outlay. That's my thought
