Unsure about whether/if it will work

Scientists are working on the possibility of cloning mammoths, but people are unsure about whether/if it will work.

Hi,
Do both whether and if work in the above? If not, could you tell me the reasons? Thanks.

Hi Angliholic Just leave out about and the sentence is fine with either whether or if. CB EDIT: Some people want to use or not with whether. I'm not one of them.

The sentence is wrong with about. Don't use it in the sentence. Drop it. About cannot be used in the sentence.
