What about the sentence "I am glad I came back before it got dark" ?

This sentence can mean that the speaker came back before it got dark sometime back in the past and he is glad.
But if someone comes back before dark and says this sentence even before it is dark, would it be correct ?

Yes. The sentence is correct in that case as well. Grammatically, you are just matching tenses. "came" and "got". The meaning is clear.
