Air is pumped into the bitumen, in a continuous oxidation process, whereby a small proportion of the oxygen reacts with bitumen and remains combined within it. The greater proportion of the oxygen evaporates in the form of water vapour and carbon dioxide, together with some waste gases. The gases from the top of the reactor are taken to a separator which extracts the oily waters. The dry gases are taken into an incinerator to remove noxious fumes/unpleasant odour and the oily waters go through a waste water processing system.
