Unlike

Hi,

A cuckoo does not, like most other birds, build a nest in which to lay eggs.

Q1) Shouldn't the underlined part read "unlike most other birds"?

ex) She isn't into music, unlike John.(John is into music)

ex) She isn't into music, like John.(John isn't into music)

Since cuckoos do differently from other birds, the "unlike pharase" seems the right choice to me.

Q2) If I placed the "unlike/like phrase" right in front the sentence, how would the answer change? Which is correct?

ex) Unlike most other birds/Like most other birds, a cukoo does not build a nest in which to lay eggs.

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, these like and unlike phrases become too ambiguous to be useful after the word not . I would only use Unlike most other birds, a cuckoo does not build a nest in which to lay eggs . In the following, the like and unlike start a new thought, so they seem all right to me.

It would be clearer if you put "Unlike most other birds" at the beginning of the sentence: Unlike most other birds, a cuckoo does not build a nest in which to lay eggs.

A cuckoo does not build a nest in which to lay eggs, like most other birds do.

- Unlike John, she isn't into music. She isn't into music like John is. (John is into music.)

- Like John, she isn't into m
