Ungrammatical sentence - ... of which...

João Vaz Corte-Real, a Portuguese navigator, claims to have discovered the New Land of the Codfish, an unidentified island of which there is some speculation that it might be Newfoundland, in present-day Canada.

I believe this is not correct. How is this meant to read exactly?

It should be clearer to you with an alternative preposition: João Vaz Corte-Real, a Portuguese navigator, claims to have discovered the New Land of the Codfish, an unidentified island about which there is some speculation that it might be Newfoundland, in present-day Canada.
