I completly agree on the first segment, realy it's "their expertise is a basis", but you got me lost for the rest... because I think the meaning of "their culture will lead them as deep as philosophy and as high as art" means = "their tradition will have the same benefit as the philosophy and the art".

whatever, I think we need also the whole text to apprehend the sentence. please I need

I have already given a complete paraphrase.

This is not correct: "their culture will lead them as deep as philosophy and as high as art" means = "their tradition will have the same benefit as the philosophy and the art".

What other part of my paraphrase do you not understand?

I simpely thing that "and their culture will lead them as deep as philosophy and as high as art" is not what you explained first! "as deep as phylosophy" is a simple comparison, which means "it will lead them deep in the same level with philosophy depth and as high as the art level".
what I mean is "the phylo and the art" are comparison object and not a target as you seem to explain.

My answer book's explanation is ' Their specialized expertise helps prepare them for their prospective intellectual development, and thier ability to think will conteribute to the perfection of their reasoning and judgment.' Does 'philosophy and art' stand for 'reasoning and judgment'?
I think the answer is confusing.

really you get me confused! and the answer is confusing with some philosophy in its expanation... and I stand by what I said before, I do think that "phylosophy and art" are used as comparison item and not as target to reach...

thank you lindsay for your explanation; you're always so sweet

Their expert knowledge will give them the ground to start from, and their culture will lead them as deep as philosophy and as high as art.

Their specialized expertise helps prepare them for their prospective intellectual development, and their ability to think will contribute to the perfection of their reasoning and judgment.
The second is not a very good paraphr
