Vocabulary

underway

Hello,
Can "go on" be used instead of underway in some contexts? Here are a few sentences: "An environmental impact study is underway and construction could begin in 2016." This is just a random sentence. Can we say "An environmental impact study is going on and..." Don't have the same meaning here? I realize that "go on" is more informal.

Also, does "Repair work is going on the south-bound lane of the motorway." I would not use "go on" in either sentence, but I just want to know if it is acceptable.

Thank you

"Repair work is going on the south-bound lane of the motorway." is ungrammatical. There needs to be another "on" after "on": "Repair work is going on on the south

Hello, Anonymous. Yes, you are right. That was a typo. I meant "going on on the south-bound lane of the motorway." Do both underway and "going on on the south-bound..." work for you?

Thanks, excuse the typo
