Understanding vs. Knowledge

Hi

Would you say that understanding and knowledge are essentially synonymous here?

  1. We were informed that he he had been hit by a car but we had no understanding of how critical his situation was.
  2. We were informed that he he had been hit by a car but we had no knowledge of how critical his situation was.

No. "Understanding" is wrong there. You have to have knowledge before you can understand. Also, a comma is needed before "but".
