Understanding ordinary word

Hi, I've understood some meanings of 'join'. But in context as follows, I'm confused how to find the meaning. Here the context:

Je-ru-sha Ab-bott
You are wan-ted
In the of-fice,
And I think you'd
Better hurry up!

Tommy Dillon, who had joined the choir, came singing up the stairs and down the corridor, his chant growing louder as he approached room F.

Does 'who had joined the choir' mean Tommy Dillon had joined in choir group? Or does it mean Tommy Dillon was singing together with somebody else? Or is there another meaning?
