Understanding a sentence for foot ball?

Please look at the following sentence from CNN.

"Cesc Fabregas claimed a penalty as Barca looked to level the tie but referee waved away his appeals before Andres Iniesta cut in from the right and fired wide of the target"

[Q1] I couldn't understand what "to level the tie" means. Could you explain its meaning to me by easier words?

[Q2] I think it seems " before Andres Iniesta who is cut in from the right and fired wide of the target". I couldn't understand its meaning either.
Could you explain its meaning to me by easier words?

Thank you in advance for your teaching.
