Understand, howl --- why are they verbs?

can someone please explain to me why are these verbs??? Tks!

I ask because it would be common in America to say "One uses his brain...", but in Britain it would be MUCH more common to say "One uses one's brain...". (The Americans, for some reason, have a problem with the word "one's", which is curious, because it's the "obvious" word to use, given that yo

I myself don't like repetition of words


Sure, but it's a pronoun - you're allowed to repeat pronouns. That's why they're there - so that we don't have to keep repeating the words for which they stand. If we couldn't repeat pronouns either, we'd be really stuck. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
