"understand" and "to be informed"

Hi,
I have noticed sometimes "understand" was used instead of "to be informed". Would you have any suggestion that in what kind of situation it is possible?

Example: "I understand John has a package for me."

It seems rather common to me in both speaking and writing. I doubt that it's either more BrE or more AmE. My guess is that it is used in all varieties of English.
