Under what condition(s) can a comma replace a conjunction?

Can you give examples?

Thank you in advance.

The most obvious one I can think of is where you have several sentences which are closely linked with a conjunction introducing the last one. The day was fine, my suit was smart, then suddenly it started to rain. No doubt Hemmingway would have written The day was fine and my suit was smart, then suddenly it started to rain, but the first one is perfectly correct.
