Under the sun

In the zone we were at first kept under the shadow of a tree. Later, a captain shouted, “blindfold these people and take them under the sun”.

Are there any mistakes? Is it OK to ask someone to take someone under the sun? (the commander wants to punish us by keeping us in the heat of the sun.) Thanks

In American English, we'd usually probably say "...out in the sun."

'under the sun' reminds me of the biblical quote "there is nothing new under the sun." which means 'in the world'.

I hope that helps.
