under the impression (that)

Hi,

Would you please tell me if the following sentence makes sense? Is there another way to convey the same idea as conveyed by the sentence?

Here's the sentence:

- Am I just an ordinary friend to you? But I was under the impression that I was much more than that to you.

Thank you.

But doesn’t work there. You could use because instead.

Or no conjunction at all (or preposition or adverb or whatever they are).

Thank you very much, Aspara Gus, for your reply.

And would it be correct as well if we said, "under the false impression" instead of just saying "under the impression"? Would there be any difference (in the meanings) if we did so, please?

Thank you once again!

If you add false, you’re implying that you are just an ordinary friend, but it wouldn’t make much sense to say that after asking whether or not that is true.
