Under & beneath

Under and beneath are interchangeable? I have learned that if the surfaces are attached to each other, beneath should be used but I do not think this is always true. So what do you think and how do you use them? Thank you so much as usual in advance.

Thank you so much so even though the two surfaces are attached to each other, can I also use "under"?

It seems to me that if you wish to challenge the rule you have quoted, you should at least provide more detail than simply "attached to each other."
