Uncountable "Volcano"?

I have often heard and read about volcano, but have never seen one.

Learner's dictionaries say it is a countable noun. But there's no determiner before volcano. Is the sentence really grammatical? I think the following should be right: I have often heard and read about a volcano, but have never seen one.

The original sentence is not grammatical. A correct version would be "I have often heard and read about volcanoes , but have never seen one". I wouldn't call your version ungrammatical, but it isn't natural, and it sounds very odd.
