Uncountable research

I'm puzzled. My dictionary (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary) says:

research (also researches [pl]

a startling piece of research into the causes of cancer

(infml) My researches into adventure holidays were very fruitful.

The informal sentence can be accepted by you as grammatical? or Is it safe for me to think that 'Informal' equals 'ungrammatical'?
